The writers at Obsidian are in top form with the story and characters of Deadfire, masterfully navigating themes of ruin & recovery, free will versus predestination, colonialism, and much more. Returning as the Watcher of Caed Nua, you are set loose into the region of the Deadfire Archipelago to continue your journey following the first game, and to chase down the cause of your death following the destruction of your keep. Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire takes the foundations of its predecessor and delivers a region and world on the brink of multiple disasters. The first Pillars of Eternity was one of the major reasons for the early-2010s renaissance of the isometric RPG, helping to revitalize a genre known for excellent writing, deep characters, and unparalleled player agency. Your ship is much more than simply a vessel for exploring. There are a few bugs so you must save often to avoid breaking quests. The game is somewhat poorly optimized so it’s much heavier than it should be and loading screens are very long. There is friendly fire, so if you like big spells that go kaboom it will be disastrous. Possible cons: It’s not a game for people who don’t like to read. The multiclass system is good if you know wtf you’re doing, but might be overwhelming if you’re not into calculating builds and synergies – and you can do just fine having just one class, it’s still solid fun. The NPCs are just as good as the ones in the previous game, and now you not only can have pets but the pets grant party-wide bonuses. You can be a mighty pirate if you want to, and there are naval battles despite the fact it’s much easier to just jump aboard the enemy ship and kick everyone’s ass. After you know a bit about the universe, the lore becomes more meaningful. The story isn’t as captivating as the first one, and I highly recommend you play the first one so you can care about your protagonist and care about the whole thing, most of all the religious intrigue – Deadfire is a great scenario but you may lack motivation to get to know it if you’re not invested in the story. Jumping into Deadfire was a logical next step. Pillars of Eternity is my favorite RPG of all time. Play the first game to get properly motivated to slap a god for being a jerk. There are pirates, there are pets, NPCs are nice. Discover the new region of the Deadfire – plot your own course by ship and explore the rich and exotic islands of the archipelago region, discovering new places interacting with their inhabitants and engaging in a variety of quests at every port.
